The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) is the National Government of the Red River Métis - also known as the Manitoba Métis. The Red River Métis are Canada’s Negotiating Partners in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.
The MMF seeks to fill two full-time summer Food Security Technician positions within our Energy, Infrastructure and Resource Department located at the MMF Regional Offices in the following locations: Brandon and St. Laurent, MB. The Food Security Technician will work with the department to plant, maintain, harvest, and distribute food produced, for the maximum benefit of supporting Red River Métis Citizens. There is potential for this position to continue in the fall. Due to contribution agreement stipulations, the successful candidate must be a Red River Métis Citizen.
Job Duties/Competencies:
• Coordinate travel between greenhouses for project related matters;
• Conduct field work relevant to the initiative;
• Conduct daily systems checks, nutrient levels, greenhouse temperature, new growth and trouble shooting;
• Familiarity with the greenhouse’s layout, design, and technology within including ventilation system, location and utilization of agricultural tools, and functionality of equipment;
• Record keeping/logbooks of seed inventory, equipment, SKUs, packaging, vendors, and other activities/items related to operations;
• Manage irrigation, fertigation, lighting, and heat requirements for operations;
• Germinate seeds using greenhouse equipment.
Skills and Qualifications:
• Have an MMF Citizenship Card or a letter from the Central Registry Office stating that you are in the process of receiving your citizenship;
• High school diploma and/or relevant experience in horticulture, gardening, farming, greenspace management, or similarly related is considered an asset;
• First Aid, CPR training, Green Iglu Greenhouse training, and Safe Food Handler’s certification is considered an asset;
• Experience operating small garden machinery, lawn equipment and hand tools;
• Experience working with youth in outdoor environments;
• Experience in conflict mitigation and problem solving is considered an asset;
• Ability to respond effectively to frequently changing deadlines and fast-paced situations;
• Strong communication, leadership and time management skills;
• Experience working for a not-for-profit organization and Indigenous community is an asset;
• Knowledge of Métis culture, MMF programs and services is a definite asset; and,
• Ability to travel, valid Manitoba Driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle.
