Major Purpose: The Rail and Yard Operator will assist with rail and yard operations related to railcar movements, maintenance of site appearance and upkeep, site snow removal, preparation of trains, loading of trains, inventory, basic maintenance, and inspections. It is expected that the Operator will have the ability to understand and follow operating procedures and policies while maintaining a safe work environment.
Responsibilities
• Responsible for conducting daily, weekly, and monthly inspections
• Responsible for conducting daily, weekly, and monthly preventative maintenance
• Become proficient in and follow local, provincial, and federal rail yard operating procedures and policies
• Adheres to company safety policies and procedures and willing to enforce them with other employees and visitors
• Ability to perform work safely and productively
• Capable of working with others as a team
• Ability to problem solve
• Excellent communication skills (face to face and radio)
• Attention to detail and ability to carry out instructions
• Flexible in workday task changes
• Accuracy and precision in completing necessary documentation
• Willing to attend training (on-site and off-site) as it relates to job responsibilities
• Assist with other general duties within the facility (general maintenance, landscaping)
• Willing to work a rotating shift work schedule, overtime, holidays, nights and weekends as required.
• Willing to be on call and meet call-out standards to respond to site responsibilities and emergencies
Education/Experience:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements:
• Physically able to climb up and down railcars/ladders safely, walk up and down steps, and work at heights
• Willing to work outside in inclement weather
• Willing to receive general safety training as it applies to work tasks
• Willing to work with liquid hazardous and dry bulk materials
• Can carry at least fifty (50) pounds
• In good physical condition (able to walk one (1) to two (2) miles per shift)
Qualifications
• Read, write, and understand English
• Basic math skills
• Computer skills (light data entry)
• Valid Driver’s License
• As a part of the pre-employment selection process, candidates are required to submit to and receive satisfactory results from all pre-employment background, drug, and reference checks
