Curatorial Assistant - Summer Position (May 16/23 to Aug 22/23)

The Curatorial Assistant acts as an assistant to the Director/Curator in labelling, cleaning, and properly storing artifacts in the Museum’s collection. Also acts and an assistant to the Director/Curator working towards the digitization of the Museum’s collection. The Curatorial Assistant will research the collection and history of Southeast Saskatchewan as needed. This candidate will increase the public awareness of the Museum and what it represents, the history of Southeast Saskatchewan.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Director/Curator, the Curatorial Assistant works primarily with the Museum’s collection, digitizing the collection while labeling artifacts and properly sorting them. They will also assist in the day-to-day operation, projects and special events of the Museum, as needed. Duties can include, but not limited to:
 Act as an aid to the Director/Curator with all the collections management activities such as cleaning, storing and labeling artifacts, as well as photographing and data entry into the collection database.
 Answering visitors and public inquiries on the Museum’s collection and local history.
 Assisting with the day-to-day operations, educational activities, programs, public and private tours, projects and special events of the Museum.
 Represent the Museum at key functions and events, this may include speaking to the media and the public about the Museum and its programming.
 General cleaning and maintenance of artifacts, the Museum and its grounds.
 Answering emails, phone, taking bookings, registrations and serving as a public liaison.

Qualifications:

 Students who are under 30 years of age and are currently enrolled in Full-Time studies and will be returning to those Full-Time studies in the Fall of 2023.
 Post-secondary courses desired in one or more of the following areas: Museum Studies, History, Art History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Library Studies, Marketing, Photography, Education, Visual Arts and/or related field.
 Good written and verbal communication skills and great organizational skills.
 Knowledge of Canadian and/or Saskatchewan history, an asset.
 Proficient with computers and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and use of a digital camera.
 Ability to perform physical tasks.
 Comfortable working with the public of all ages and backgrounds, as part of a team and able to work independently.
 Prior experience working in a museum, art gallery, or library and working with children, an asset.
Must have a valid driver's license.

The Souris Valley Museum is open 6 days a week. Due to these hours and special events, evening and weekend work will periodically be required.

Wage: $17/hr
