English for Work ESL Instructor - part-time

The PLLC is currently seeking an English for Work ESL instructor for classes held two afternoons or evenings per week for 8 weeks.

Location: Portage Learning and Literacy Centre, Portage la Prairie
Schedule: TBD - 2.5 hours/class twice per week
Term: July 4, 2023 – August 25, 2023
Wage Range: $28-30/hour plus vacation pay, for 6 hours per week

Role and Responsibilities:
• Plan and teach settlement-focused lessons with an emphasis on essential skills and strategies for workplace success to a group of adult learners.
• Provide information integrated within the class syllabus based on client needs and student-suggested topics of interest related to Canadian workplaces.
• Provide students with the coaching and practice they need to speak and understand English in typical workplace situations, from the conference room to the break room.
• Instruct class according to a daily lesson plan using appropriate and relevant resources and methods of delivery, in accordance with Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and principles of adult learning.
• Provide a safe, nurturing bias-free, positive and respectful learning environment that recognizes individual differences.
• Provide feedback to students informally on an ongoing basis and formally through student progress reports and conferencing.
• Maintain student attendance records and complete monthly reporting requirements.
• Participate in professional development as needed and available.

Qualifications:
• Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CTESL) from a TESL Canada recognized institution or trained in Canada to teach English.
• Experience developing, preparing and delivering student-centred and task-based lessons suitable for a multi-faceted classroom, including multi-level learners.
• Knowledge/awareness of Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), including willingness to complete CLB Bootcamp Certification.
• Experience with or willing to learn how to apply Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) for all students in your class.
• Excellent communication and cross-cultural skills.
• Ability to work independently with solid time management and organizational skills.
• Approachable and patient while instructing and mentoring adult learners.
• Punctual, reliable, and a team player.
