Animal Care Supervisor

Position Description:
Working closely with the Executive Director and Operations Manager, the Animal Care Supervisor is responsible for the shelter foster program and various animal care needs and processes as well as the supervision of the animal care staff.

The position is a 40 hour work week working mainly daytime hours, with some flexibility to accommodate shelter needs.

Position Responsibilities:
- Ensure the shelter animal care meets or exceeds industry standards and that animal housing is cleaned in accordance with operational procedures and policies
- Approve and monitor the animal care department staff schedule to ensure sufficient coverage and cost effective time management practices
- Manage and coach animal care staff as per shelter policy and procedures and in a timely manner including: recruitment, training, supervision, coaching, evaluating, vacation and time off approvals and coverage, scheduling and discipline as required
- Provide support to the animal care department staff and volunteers
- Provide volunteer guidance and support, specifically during AM shifts and in the areas of kennel enrichment & crate cleaning, storage and goods in in kind donation distribution
- Complete all aspects of the shelter foster program including; recruitment, training, recognition, daily and emergency support
- Keep foster manuals, packages and documents current and relevant
- Participate in weekly SAFER assessments
- Participate in Health and Behavior Meetings as requested and as a voting member
- Act as the management representative on Saturday`s
- Ensure appropriate and timely movement of shelter animals in accordance with the MTA process
- Complete 1.5 hours per day working with assigned shelter animals requiring rehabilitation
- Prepare shelter food & supply orders
- Daily monitoring and refilling of animal care food & supplies as needed
- Communicate animal related health and behavioral concerns to the appropriate department ie. Hospital, Adoptions, Behavior
- Ensure animal files are updated as appropriate
- Respond to after hour emergencies as needed
- Assist with Wag Wednesday as requested
- Prepare recommendations and proposals for the annual budget
- Produce and maintain a Critical Path Document
- As part of the management team ensure employees and volunteers of the organization are treated in a fair and equitable manner and foster and promote an environment of teamwork
- Alert the Executive Director immediately of risks to the organization: people (clients, staff, management, and volunteers), property, finances, goodwill or reputation
- Promote professionalism, cleanliness and a healthy & safe work environment at all times
- Respond to public inquiries in a professional, courteous, and timely manner
- Conduct themselves in a professional and courteous manner at all times while working as an employee of the Cochrane & Area Humane Society
- Help the reception and adoption staff to assist the public when requested to do so
- Have and maintain a valid driver’s license and operate the Society’s vehicle in a responsible and legal manner at all times
- Handle all animals in a humane way using positive reinforcement methods
- Ensure appropriate and timely communication is shared with-in and between departments on a daily basis
- Remain familiar with and supportive of, the goals and mission of the Cochrane & Area Humane Society
- Adhere to Shelter policy and procedures
- Complete all mandatory training
- Complete accident/incident reports as necessary
- Complete other related duties as requested by the Executive Director or Operations Manager

Qualifications and Skills:
- Supervision & leadership experience
- Animal behavior knowledge and/or experience, with either PACE, CPDT-KA, KPA certification (or comparable) in place or being worked toward a definite asset
- Strong organizational, productivity, prioritizing, and time management skills
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Sound working knowledge of computers and Microsoft software, Word, Excel, Email and Internet
- Ability to successfully handle all breeds and sizes of dogs, cats and other domestic pets
- Physically capable of working in a fast paced environment that includes lifting, bending and other repetitive movements
- Previous experience working with charitable organizations and animal welfare would be definite assets
- Knowledge of human resource management and higher level administration experience, to include supervision and leadership, motivation techniques and customer service skills a definite asset
- Genuine concern for the welfare of animals
