The Shop Lead Hand is responsible for day-to-day maintenance activities and is an on-call resource for operations, or the mechanic assigned to buses requiring attention. The Shop Lead Hand must achieve set standards of maintenance within budgeted costs and in accordance with company policy and procedure. The position is directly accountable to the Operations Manager, and indirectly to the Director of Maintenance for the effective utilization of shop facilities, equipment and manpower, and the maintenance, efficiency, and safety of buses serviced.

Principal duties and responsibilities include:

Ongoing maintenance/repair of buses
CVIP Inspections
Respond to breakdowns
Spring/Winter maintenance
Work to meeting budgets and equipment forecasts
Monitors manpower skill levels to ensure operating requirements and report on performances
Supervise all maintenance personnel
Assumes accountability for each employee’s quality of work and productivity
Work with the Operations Manager and Director of Maintenance to identify corrective action(s)
Aware of key cost areas such as warranties, consumption, and inventory levels of parts and supplies
Schedule sequence of maintenance services and semi-annual inspections on buses to optimize balances between operating requirements, downtime of revenue equipment, and overall shop productivity
Ensure compliance with other maintenance standards and policies including:
Tire condition
Winter works
Yard, building, and mechanical equipment condition
Ensure the shop employees comply with company and governmental safety procedures and regulations
Assist in establishing time standards, productivity measures, budgets, and forecasts
Checks that work orders are accurate and appropriate for work performed; clarifies work with dispatch as required

Journeyman Ticket (Heavy Duty or Automotive)
Valid Driver’s License, Class 2 or 3 considered an asset
CVIP – Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program License
Own hand tools
Clear criminal record
Minimum 3 years of related experience
Exposure to working on diesel engines
Analytical and trouble-shooting skills
Computer proficiency
Experience in maintenance planning and implementing standards and controls
Excellent communication skills
Ability to build relationships with external suppliers, maintenance shops, and regulatory bodies
