Duties: The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant performs some or all of the following duties:
Prepare materials needed for each session for students with communication disorders and delays
Administering speech-language screening protocols, as directed by the supervising speech-language pathologist.
Rehearse activities provided by the SLP with the students
Provide remedial therapy to students with speech and language disorders
Keep students motivated and excited about communication therapies
Determine appropriate reinforcers to use to achieve desired outcomes
Keep detailed logs of activities completed with students and student response to activities
Participate in team meetings as requested by the SLP
Supports teachers in implementing Personal Program Plans to reflect speech, language and counselling goals
Meet regularly with the supervising SLP to review the day and plan for next day’s sessions
Design daily lesson plans based on the specific goals the SLP has provided for each student and the therapy material suggestions they have offered
Demonstrate the therapy process, supplying and demonstrating therapy materials to parents/guardians
Provide reports on student progress to the supervising SLP on an ongoing verbal basis, as well as a written progress report for the SLP at year-end or at the request of the SLP.
Prepare materials for the speech-language department
May perform other related duties as assigned by the Speech-Language Pathologist
A minimum of a two (2) year certificate in speech-language pathologist technician or speech-language pathologist assistant from a recognized educational institution as approved by the Board of Education is required
A valid driver’s licence is required
Ability to do carry heavy loads up to 25 kgs is required
A working knowledge of computers is required
Note: A minimum of six (6) months as a school-based speech assistant with satisfactory participation in all ongoing training offered by the speech language pathologist (S.L.P.) may be considered in lieu of certification
Wage & Benefits: In accordance with the current CUPE Local 5512 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Currently, this is a range of $18.11 to $21.54 per hour.
