Inititiaves for Just Communities (IJC) is a faith based organization which operates four community restorative justice programs. These programs strive to provide guidance, support and relationship for people living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) or intellectual disabilities as well as those who are currently or have been previously incarcerated. IJC provides opportunities and services to people regardless of background or affiliation.

Specialized Support Worker

• Specialized Support Workers work one on one with a participant who has been identified as requiring specialized training, consistent supports and integrated behavior plans.

Responsibilities:
1. Ensure the health and safety of the program participant and report any incident or concerns
2. Maintain a professional therapeutic relationship
3. Follow the behavior plan set out for the participant consistently
4. Support the participant in reaching their goals, helping them assess their choices and decisions

Other Duties:
• Complete all required written documentation with accuracy, objectivity and in a timely fashion
• Read the communication book and logs to be aware of participant’s needs and case direction
• Plan and implement activities with the participant
• Carrying program cell phone while on shift
• Helping participants to look after their environment which can include cleaning of El’dad property, inside buildings, vehicles and yard

Qualifications:
• Must be able to support and implement the mission and vision of the programs of IJC
• Excellent communication skills, both interpersonal and written.
• Critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work collaborative and respectfully with colleagues.
• Strong planning and organizational skills.
• Must hold a current driver’s license and provide driver’s abstract
• Ability to assess risk and set safe & appropriate boundaries.
• Ability to handle work related stress.
• Ability to exercise patience and flexibility.

Specialized Qualifications
• Consistently follow and carry out behavior plans
• Provide dependable structure and routine within the home and on shifts

• Respond calmly and consistently to behavioral challenges addressing the cause behind the challenge

• Support the participant when they are escalating by employing de-escalation and self-regulation techniques

Specialized Training Provided

• Training from a behavior specialist specific to the participant
• De-escalation training and practical skills

• Boundaries training; El’dad training
• Non Violent Crisis Intervention

• First Aid
• Vulnerable Person Act
• Agency Protection Training

Expectations:
• Recognize the interaction of one’s own personal values, religion, and culture in the attempt to provide respectful, dignity-enhancing support for program participants.
• Build and maintain a professional therapeutic relationship with program participants.
• Maintain confidentiality with participant and program information
• Adhere to El’dad policies and procedures
• Work and communicate effectively in a team setting
• Able to drive with participant in the vehicle
• Complete a criminal record, adult abuse registry check, vulnerable sector registry check and a driver’s abstract is required.

Assets:
1. Experience working in Social Services field.
2. Education in Social Services or another relevant field

Terms:
1. This position is dependent on government funding.
2. Wages follow the Direct Support Worker Wage scale ($14.03 - $15.32, dependent on education and experience) plus a $2.00 per hour premium
3. This position is eligible for the IJC group benefit package if the employee consistently works more than 28 hours per week.
4. There will be a 3-month probationary period.
