On behalf of our client, ABC Fire & Safety Equipment Limited, we are searching for a Controller to join their team located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Since 1979, ABC Fire & Safety has provided customers with quality products and services including Fire Equipment, First Aid/Medical Supplies, Emergency Medical Devices, Fire Extinguishers, Automatic Suppression Systems and Industrial Safety Supplies.
Reporting to the President, the Controller is an integral part of the management team and is responsible for all financial planning, reporting and internal controls. This individual will take an active part in helping the company achieve strategic goals and lead and direct the accounting team. The Controller will be responsible for the day-to-day financial activities of the organization including financial management, accounting, reporting, internal controls, audit and adherence to various regulations, financial planning, analysis, budgeting, forecasting and information systems. This financial role will appeal to a confident professional with excellent interpersonal and communications skills and enjoys being hands on and driving results.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct and manage the daily operations of the accounting department
Direct all aspects of the accounting operations such as reporting, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, bank reconciliation, payroll, budgeting, revenue, expenditure variance analysis and inventory management
Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner, clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements
Develop and monitor the annual budget including forecasting revenues and expenses, and analyzing variances
Monitor financial performance against budgets and explore, analyze and report variances for discussion and decision-making
Maintain effective and efficient accounting systems, processes and practices based on recognized accounting principles, policies, procedures and guidelines while ensuring compliance
Assign projects and direct staff to ensure compliance and accuracy
Recommend and implement changes as appropriate to improve internal controls and efficiencies
Maintain, evaluate and recommend improvements to the accounting systems, and internal controls of the company
Coordinate the year-end audit process including the review and/or preparation of working papers, schedules, analyses and other required documentation
Manage financial banking and external professional relationships
Act as a resource and provide assistance and advice to accounting staff with respect to financial issues and the interpretation of financial reports
Provide day-to-day leadership and lead the development of a positive and constructive culture through the facilitation of teamwork
Assess and evaluate financial performance of the company regarding long-term operational goals, budgets and forecasts
Provide the President with historical, current and future projected information and analysis about organizational performance
Provide advice and guidance to the leadership team about areas of concern and opportunities for improvement
Coordinate the development/ renewal of policies and procedures required for good governance and management of the organization
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
CPA professional designation is preferable
Minimum of 5 years of financial management experience, particularly in cost accounting
Understanding or experience with inventory management, sales, installations and customer service would be an asset
Financial systems and POS systems background would be an asset
Entrepreneurial and strategic business sense, progressive and forward thinker who excels in a fast-paced environment
Ability to work independently and work effectively in a team environment
Strong communication and organizational skills
Detail oriented with excellent analytical and technical skills
Exceptional time-management and organizational skills
